San Francisco Anxiety Help Psychotherapist
Anxiety is a normal reaction to a stressful situation. It can help a person to physiologically prepare to deal with a tense situation. In general, a healthy amount of anxiety helps one cope. But when this anxiety becomes excessive or occurs in an irrational way about an everyday situation, it has become a disabling.
Anxiety is an unpleasant, complicated combination of emotions including fear, worry and apprehension, and is typically accompanied by physical feelings of heart palpitations, chest pain, nausea and shortness of breath, along with feelings of inner nervousness.
With Anxiety, individuals frequently worry about such things as future events and past behaviors, family matters, social acceptance, personal abilities, and performance.
Typically, a socially anxious individual looks for ways to avoid risks when possible, feels strong anxiety before an event, and continues to experience anxiety and worry throughout the event.
One might even experience a panic attack. Panic attacks can feel debilitating because one can not predict when or where an attack will occur, and often worry and dread the next attack between episodes. A panic attack is characterized by:
- Sudden attacks of terror
- Pounding heart
- Sweatiness
- Weakness
- Faintness
- Dizziness
- Chills
- Feeling flush
- Tingle or feel numb
- Nausea
- Chest pain
- Smothering sensations
Treatment has found to be of great benefit for suffers of anxiety. Treatment for anxiety commonly combines cognitive-behavioral psychotherapy and possibly medication. I will work with you to understand the underpinnings of your anxiety and develop an effective strategy to reduce the level of anxiety you experience.
